Quelle meilleure occasion de s’habiller que d’assister à un bal des années 20 à New York? Chaque été depuis 9 ans, et pendant deux weekends, est organisée la Jazz Age Lawn Party sur Governors Island, petite île au sud de Manhattan. L’opportunité de se la jouer comme Gatsby et de s’immerger dans la décadence des années folles. Les New Yorkais se prennent au jeu, sortent leurs plus belles pièces vintage et c’est une énorme fête au son de Michael Arenella et son orchestre. Les photos rétro, les danses, le picnic, les cocktails de la prohibition, et les ombrelles et plumes de ces dames nous plongent dans l’univers enchanté des années 20.

What better occasion to dress up than to attend a 1920s’ ball in New York? Twice every Summer for 9 years now, the Jazz Age Lawn Party takes place on Governors Island, south of Manhattan, for a weekend of celebrations. This is the ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the Roaring Twenties and experience the Gatsby lifestyle. New Yorkers play the part and dress up with their perfect vintage attire to dance to the music of Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. Several other performances of music, dance and even a 1920s Fashion show are among the festivities. And, when you are feeling like leaving the dance floor, you can simply enjoy a picnic among fellow partygoers, sip on Prohibition cocktails from St-Germain and browse the little vendors for some vintage shopping.

Visit Woodstock, the Hippy Town of New York State

Woodstock, vous en avez forcément entendu parler, non? Petite ville dans l’état de New York, à la frontière des Catskills, Woodstock est une ville mythique célèbre pour son festival de musique, ses hippies, son peace sign. Bref, année 1969. Tout ça, c’est du passé et pourtant il y reigne une atmosphère encore libéré, ce je-ne-sais-quoi qui nous donne l’impression que les années ne se sont pas écoulés. On y rencontre de vieux hippies, des amateurs de musique et d’un mode de vie écolo, et aussi pas mal de boutiques antiques.

You have obviously heard about Woodstock before, no? Woodstock is a mystical town famously known for its music festival, its hippies, its peace sign. Well, it was 1969 Baby! It is a small town located in the New York state, north of NYC and at the border of The Catskills. All of this might belong to the past but there is still such an atypical atmosphere giving the feeling that years did not really go by. You can still encounter old hippies, music fanatics and green movement protestants, as well as a lot of antique boutiques.

Qui dit retour de l’été, dit shopping de chapeaux. A la plage comme à la ville, il n’y a aucune excuse pour rester chic et élégante. Et qui de mieux que la sublime Audrey Hepburn et sa collection de chapeaux d’été pour trouver l’inspiration. Que ce soit en short, pantalon en lin, jupe culotte ou robe maxi, le chapeau finira le look et vous garantit une place au soleil du meilleur look de l’été. Gotham West Market, un Food Hall à Manhattan

La chose qui manque le plus à Manhattan, c’est Brooklyn. Dit comme ça, ça paraît vide de sens mais les locaux et habitués de la ville comprendront mon ressenti. Manhattan, c’est beau, grand, beaucoup de monde mais aussi souvent trop sérieux, et parfois un peu trop snob. Le Gotham West Market, c’est un peu Brooklyn qui s’invite à Manhattan avec une attitude cool et amicale. Ce Brooklyn où la coolitude est mère, on le retrouve dans ce food hall dans le quartier du Hell’s Kitchen. Un food hall, késako? Plusieurs restaurants se partagent l’espace et les clients se restaurent au milieu. En résumé, pas besoin de se fixer sur un type de cuisine, chacun prend se qu’il veut et se retrouve au milieu. Souvent, on partage la table avec de parfaits inconnus et s’enchaînent des discussions enflammées sur la vie à Manhattan et autres sujets préférés des New Yorkais.

The most obvious thing missing in Manhattan is Brooklyn. That doesn’t make any sense you might say; but New Yorkers can understand my statement. Manhattan, is great and majestic with tons of people, but it is also very business-like, and sometimes a little bit too snobbish. The Gotham West Market is like Brooklyn inviting itself to Manhattan, bringing that relaxing and cool vibe, and combining it with good cuisine. This unique food hall is located in Hell’s Kitchen, which make it the perfect spot to meet with friends.

Instagram & Other Stories: May 2014 NYC

Le mois de mai à New York, c’est la transition entre le printemps et l’été. Le moral des New Yorkais se rebooste avec l’arrivée des beaux jours, et on recommence à s’exposer la peau de Manhattan à Brooklyn. Au revoir les bottines et bonjour les sandales et loafers de chez J.Crew, les longues robes d’été et le retour du style nautique (mon obsession pour les rayures ne se soupçonne vraiment pas!). Par une nuit de mai, j’ai pu retrouver le NYC Ballet. Avec ses représentations et costumes magnifiques, un tour en coulisse et la montée sur scène pour admirer la vue; on ne peut pas plus New York qu’une nuit comme celle-ci. En mai, on recommence à prendre sa pause déjeuner à l’extérieur, à Bryant Park la semaine et à Central Park pour de longues promenades le weekend. Quant au brunch, autant rester dans le parc et profiter de la réouverture de la célèbre Tavern-on-the-Green, ambiance country club garantie. Pour le dessert, ce sera une glace au populaire Big Gay Ice Cream Truck ou chez le plus chic Sant Ambroeus. Comme l’arrivée de l’été ne serait pas complète sans un petit tour dans les Hamptons, le long weekend du Memorial Day est tombé à point pour retrouver Southampton et sa plage sublime. Oh l’été, comme tu m’as manqué.

May in New York was a slow transition from Spring to Summer. New Yorkers’ moods have brightened with the sun, and skin is starting to show off in the streets from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Goodbye boots and hello sandals and J.Crew loafers, long flawy dresses and nautical style (can you tell I am obsessed with stripes?). On a warm rainy night, I had the pleasure to attend the NYC Ballet. Amazing dance performances and costumes, a tour behind-the-scene and a privilege to admire the view from the stage; it doesn’t get more New York than that. In May, it’s time to take your lunch outside; Bryant Park will do during the week, and weekend walks in Central Park seem reinvigorating. As for food (there is always food involved with me), do not leave Central Park just yet and enjoy a brunch at the Tavern-on-the-Green, the famous restaurant that just reopened and it’s worth the trip. For dessert, my ice cream craving is definitely satisfied whether it’s with a treat from the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck or the tasty-chic Sant Ambroeus. And, as the kick-off of Summer festivities would not be complete without a trip to the Hamptons, the long Memorial Day weekend was a blast and a much needed getaway to Southampton. Oh Summer, how I missed you!
