L’Art du Voyage avec Louis Vuitton – NYC exposition

Flying Louis Vuitton exhibition New York 2018

Oh folks, maybe I went there a little late but at least I did not miss this one…  If only you knew the number of exhibitions I miss while living in here…  It’s a curse!  I’m not proud of it.  But not this time!  2017 ended with the Louis Vuitton exhibition in New York, in the Financial District.  I was blown away by the settings of each room and the incredible amount of pieces on display.  I can absolutely say that it is one of my favorite exhibitions I had the chance to view in NYC.

When you think Louis Vuitton, you think monograms, bags, (outrageously expensive ones), haute couture, Hollywood and Jet Set…  However, what we tend to forget is that the house of Louis Vuitton is focused on the art of travel.  Louis, indeed started his journey by traveling from his native Jura region to Paris, by foot (!) at the age of 14.  He then apprenticed the savoir-faire of trunk making before launching his own business.  It was 1853.  All the pieces were meticulously thought through and produced.  The making was very ingenuous and its thirst for innovation gave birth to the Travel with Style pride. The exhibition Volez, Voguez, Voyagez is focused on the art of traveling and each room is an hommage to Louis Vuitton’s craftsmanship through road, air and train travels.

What I’ve learned other than the history of the house during the exhibit, is how packing at the time was such a serious business.  Indeed, we wore more clothes at once and people would travel for longer periods of time.  You also had an outfit for every occasion : travel, lounging, hosting, working, walking…  There is also a trunk, a case for every function, from the clothes, to the shoe shine, from the mechanical tools to the music instruments, from your books and writing pads to the typewriter… You name it!

STYLE is the word that resonates in me when thinking about Louis Vuitton after this viewing.  Since its first day of business, Louis has produced beautiful and strong trunks and suitcases that still prevails in today’s age.
