It did not take me long to escape the madness of New York City.  No need for a passport or a flight.  It only took a train ride to Sayville and a short boat ride to reach our destination.  From Penn Station, NYC, the journey is less than 3 hours to arrive at The Pines in Fire Island.  I was immediately charmed by this place and so happy to spend a few days of vacation.  You followed my adventures live on my Instagram Story and a lot of you wanted to know more about it.  I hope this article will answer your questions and motivate you to put Fire Island on your travel bucket list while visiting New York.

Fire Island is a thin and long island facing Long Island, NY and the Atlantic Ocean.  Along the island, you will encounter several small villages.  There is a water taxi to go from one village to another but you can also walk there through the beach.  We went there with a dear couple of friends: Bob, Patrick, and their dog Sophie.  We stayed at a charming Bed and Breakfast (Pines Overlook Bluff) with a swimming pool, small apartments and even a jacuzzi on a rooftop overlooking the ocean (a must prior bedtime).  Being only a minute away from the beach was an ideal location.  The only downside was probably the weather, a couple of grey days with the rain.  That did not stop us from having a good time and enjoy the island.  The dogs were for sure the happiest creatures in the world.  We were at The Pines where no cars were possible.  You can walk everywhere though the beach or wooden boardwalks.  We also visited the village next door, Cherry Grove.

You can tell by this photos, no cars are allowed.  Inside the island, everything is accessible through these wooden paths surrounded by bambous.  The whole place was pretty deserted and so peacefully quiet.  It was as if we were alone all the time with the nature.  We were lucky to still be in the low season.  Once the Summer starts, Fire Island becomes very popular again and hosts some of the craziest parties.  The Pines is also know for its expensive real estate.  Some of the houses are enormous and magnificent. If I had the money, I would have a hard time choosing which one I like the most…  Our friends have been staying at Fire Island for over 20 years and they are very familiar with the place.  It was great to meet locals and even brunch at their place.  This mini vacation was amazing and I am so glad I was able to discover this special place close to NYC.

A huge thank you to Bob, Patrick, Sophie, Jim, Chris and Richard and all the locals we had a chance to meet during our stay.

What do you think?  Have you ever visited Fire Island?  Are you ready to plan a trip there?

xx Jennie
